Primary Maths Tutoring
Vertex Maths offers tutoring for primary school students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. Sessions are designed to be engaging, supportive, and focused on developing genuine mathematical understanding rather than rote learning.
Lessons are centred around play, exploration, and discussion. While some written work may be used, we avoid heavy reliance on worksheets. Instead, tutors use concrete materials such as counters, fraction shapes, number lines, tiles, blocks, and visual models to help students make sense of mathematical ideas.
Through these experiences, students develop strong foundations in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), as well as fractions, decimals, percentages, early algebra, and geometry.
Tutors are selected for their patience, kindness, and strong maths ability, and sessions are paced carefully to suit each child’s confidence, attention, and learning style.
Primary Maths FAQs
Not at all. For younger students, sessions look very similar to structured play. Activities may involve games, stories, counting objects, building with blocks, or exploring patterns. The tutor’s role is to gently guide these activities so mathematical ideas naturally emerge.
The Australian Curriculum is used as a reference and guide, but sessions are not restricted to it. Tutors focus on what each student needs most in order to build understanding and confidence.
Sessions are typically 60 minutes. When lessons are engaging and interactive, this length works well for most primary-aged students.
After each session, the tutor provides a brief summary outlining what was covered and how the student engaged with the material. Parents are also welcome to chat with the tutor directly after sessions.
